Christmas Gift Guide
Words by Emma Hearnes Photography by Jasmin Morrison
If you have kids – or are immature like me and still have Disney movies on regular rotation as an adult – you’ll be inundated with one question in the lead-up to the festive season: What is the true meaning of Christmas?
Depending on your beliefs, Christmas may mean different things [or nothing at all] to each of you. One thing we can all agree on, however, is that consumerism has a firm grip on the holiday season whether in the form of the Coca-Cola-red Santa or otherwise. Each year we seem to be pushed to buy more and more, for less and less. Gone are the days when one thoughtful gift waited for you under the tree. Now, you can expect a pile of ten, each from one cheapo megastore or another. And let’s be honest, by the time next December rolls around most of them have been broken, thrown out or regifted.
Getting to see so many talented regional Australian creatives and businesses in these pages we can’t help but envision a brighter and kinder alternative this Christmas. One where craftsmanship, creativity and community are celebrated. Where the joy of giving extends beyond the lucky loved one receiving your gift. It spreads to the maker whose livelihood you are funding. And even to you, knowing that you’ve made a meaningful difference to someone who truly needs it.
I was recently visiting Gippsland-based artist Josephine Jakobi and commented on the beautiful selection of local artwork hanging in her studio. Her response, as eloquent as ever, was: “When you buy a piece of art from somebody local, it’s like voting for them. You’re saying, through your actions, that you want that artist to succeed and be happy.”
